The Album - Green Vinyl Dream
The Song - "Kaleidoscope"
"Kaleidoscope" by Green Vinyl Dream was the Sound File Of The Month for August, 2002 at Sight N Sound.org.
We first heard of Green Vinyl Dream from the Mark & Brian Radio Program, a morning radio show syndicated in the western region of the United Sates. Perplexed by Mark & Brian's raving of Green Vinyl Dream, we sought to pick up our copy of the CD. As promised, Green Vinyl Dream does not disappoint.
From a classic Brian Adams like intro "Kaleidoscope" slips into a soft set of pretty verses before the catchy chorus bolts forward. Vocals that are clearly not amateur remind of Guns & Roses frontman while the chorus brings enveloping harmonies amidst a crystal clear ride. "Kaleidoscope" has the virtue of not being too busy with instrumentation or effects leaving an easily understood mix of lyric and well crafted musicianship. What's not to like about "Kaleidoscope" is beyond me.

Graced with story telling artwork, Green Vinyl Dream's self titled debut album is worth getting just to learn the fate of the chained up butterfly on the front cover. Oh yeah, the music is pretty damned good too. We're talkin' Rock and Roll here. There's no Metal here, no Rap, no Hip-Hop, no Ska, but maybe a twinkle of Alternative. It's Rock and Roll and GREAT at that!
Surprisingly, this self Produced work gives the spatial depth and color expected of top name Producer/Engineer teams. Throughout the album sound separation, effects, panning, and levels are PERFECT, that is to say, it could not be improved upon. Green Vinyl Dream was Engineered, Mixed, and Mastered by Jeff Frickman.
Green Vinyl Dream picked a perfect tune to start their album off with. "I Am" is the "first track" kind of song with a short teaser guitar riff intro that is quickly followed by powerful bars - perfect to nod your head to.
"Cover Me" and "Pool of Echoes" are both on the mellow end of Rock songs but nonetheless grip and hold with memorable riffs and chorus lines. "Cover Me" features a pretty complicated guitar solo, impressive although somewhat Journey in nature.
I guess every band has to have a ballad that just kicks your behind with it's emotion and power. "Seed The Sky" does just that. Although not a love ballad, "Seed The Sky" has quickly grown to one of my favorites with it's elegance and drive. Bassist Rick Zaccaro haunts me with a Chris Squire motion before the final round of chorus are delivered. So sweet.
Realizing we're in the Y2K's Green Vinyl Dream shows signs of today's Alternative Rock sound with the Collective Soulish sound delivered in "Magnified". A killer tune - you can hear "Magnified" from their webiste (via mp3.com).
"Dandelion Wine" and "Kid Mystical" leave no one sitting. They stir with their "get up and move around" beat and motivation allthewhile planting Eagles like harmonies.
Green Vinyl Dream is off to a great start with their self titled debut album. Very capable of hanging with the big boys, these lads should go far.
